Pre 2009 Featherweight GP’s! Fights To Keep An Eye On

Din Thomas will not participate in the DREAM Featherweight GP. However, another fighter from American Top Team will.

Fights To Keep An Eye On

Michihiro Omigawa will make his Featherweight (Lightweight in Shooto) debut on Sunday in a very tough fight against Shintaro Ishiwatari. If Omigawa wins it would be realistic to think that he would be in the SENGOKU GP since he is a Yoshida Dojo fighter.

DREAM veteran KODO is also fighting on the Shooto card on Sunday. As he already has a fight in DREAM, a victory might give him a spot in their GP.

Kenji Arai vs. Masanori Kanehara and Masaya Takita vs. Jameel Massouh will take place on February 1st at this years first Pancrase Changing Tour event. Considering the SENGOKU Pancrase connection, don’t be surprised to see a couple of these fighters in the SENGOKU GP.

Realistic Participants

Dokonjonosuke Mishima – Current DEEP Featherweight champion Mishima has won two fights in a row since moving down in weight. He would be one of the favorites if he participated in one of the GP’s, but can he make the low weight that the DREAM GP is looking to be at?

Marlon Sandro – Featherweight King Of Pancrase Marlon Sandro is currently undefeated in MMA. He fights out of the Nova Uniao camp and has already defeated a couple of fighters who could be in one of the tournaments.

Masakazu Imanari – Expect to see former DEEP and Cage Rage Featherweight champion, current DEEP Bantamweight champion, and leg lock specialist Masakazu Imanari in the DREAM GP.

Yuji Hoshino – Hoshino has not lost a fight in his last 11. He won the Cage Force Featherweight GP this year with three impressive wins. He defeated Antonio Carvalho, submitted DREAM veteran Takeshi Yamazaki and defeated “Wicky” Akiyo Nishiura in the final. He has fought a lot of good fighters such as Chris Lytle, Satoru Kitaoka, Nate Marquardt, SHOJI, Daiske Nakamura, and Koji Oishi.

Dark Horses

Chang Son Jon – Korean Chang Son Jon has only had two professional MMA fights thus far but he has defeated good fighters in those two fights. In his first fight he defeated UFC & PRIDE veteran Michihiro Omigawa and in his last fight he KO’d Cage Force Featherweight Tournament Semifinalist Fanjin Son in just 17 seconds.

Un Sik Song – MARS and HERO’S veteran Un Sik Song has not fought since 2007, but with a 7-0 record and a good victory over Takumi Yano, he could surprise some people if he is among the 32 participants.

o yea, Tokoro, and Atsushi im sure would end up in the Dream GP, maybe Daren Uyennoyama? who does ATT have at FW that could join the Dream GP since Din isnt in it

I don’t know if Mishima can make DREAM’s weight (if it will be 138-139 as rumored). I wouldn’t be surprised to see him in SENGOKU’s GP (even though he’s in DEEP).

I expect Hoshino in SENGOKU and Wicky in DREAM.

It’s gonna be awesome when they start announcing names.

Yea, Tokoro if he recovers. Uyenoyama also most likely in DREAM GP. There are a few from ATT who could be in it.

have you heard any rumors if Lion might be in either? or if anybody from Shooto? i havnt heard anything, i know Pancrase guys might go to the Sengoku gp and the DEEP guys might go to the Dream gp, but im not really sure who Shooto is closer with. maybe Dream considering Aoki is the MW champ, and Kawajiri, Hansen, Kid have all fought in Shooto before.
    what do you think

  8. January 16, 2009 at 6:22 am

I don’t know about the SHOOTO fighters. But I don’t think all will go to one place or the other if some of them participate. Even with DEEP and Pancrase, just because someone is with DEEP doesn’t mean they will go to DREAM (Katsuya Inoue fought in DREAM, Yokota fought in SENGOKU), even though it is most likely.

For example, there will be a talented Korean in the next DEEP card. Saeki compared him to Kim Dong Hyun and said that he thinks and hopes that he will go up in DREAM OR SENGOKU in the future.
