DREAM Open-Weight GP This Year?! DREAM.8 Poster

DREAM.7 and its horrible refereeing is over. With the event receiving quite low ratings (even though it was a past midnight timeslot) something has to be done. This blog has a new post about a newspaper article saying that DREAM will hold an open-weight GP this summer. DREAM EP Sasahara is quoted in the article as saying that he wants it to be the same scale as the IWGP tournaments (in the 1980’s). He also says that he wants to negotiate with Fedor.

Sasahara said at the post DREAM.7 press conference that he will consider Kawajiri’s proposal of a Lightweight number 1 contender fight between himself and J.Z.Calvan at DREAM.9 in May.

In other DREAM news, the poster for DREAM.8 has been released and it includes Katsuyori Shibata, Hideo Tokoro, Minowaman, Hayato “Mach” Sakurai, Shinya Aoki, and Ronaldo Jacare.

Update: Yuya Shirai vs. Yoon Young Kim at clubDEEP on March 14th will be a DREAM Welterweight GP qualifier.

They need to create a buzz. Good mma doesn’t seem to matter to mma fans, yet.

Open Weight Grand Prix would be sweet. There was also something said about a DREAM vs. Strikeforce (or some other organization) GP. Whatever can inspire the scene is cool with me.

I’m surprised they receive such low ratings but constantly fill out the stadiums.

Yeah, Sasahara said he would announce something special next month and said that there was a hint in the pamphlet in the arena at DREAM.7. It seems that there was something about Strikeforce in it.

I heard Tanigawa mentioned something about holding a women’s K-1 event sometime this year…

He also supposedly mentioned the importance of globalization, teens, women, and heels in today’s world of sports (and added that the heel is now gone lol).

Maybe this surprise announcement has something to do with either of these. I got this from a forum post that was based on a rough translation of an article in the GBR web magazine, but since I don’t speak Japanese, it’d be really nice if someone can translate it for everyone.

He said that the world, women, teens are needed in a sport. K-1 Koshien will be bigger this year.

FEG are starting a K-1 Women’s division. The first fight will be at the K-1 MAX Korea event on the 20th. It will be between Japanese female high school student REINA (Lena) and Korean Im Su Jeong (she was in ong bak and some Korean TV-show, also fought in Neo-Fight and is a Muay Thai BW champ in Korea).

I know for a fact that DREAM has offered up Jacare to fight in Strikeforce, so expect more of that to happen this year…

A strikeforce vs. dream, cage vs. ring series would be interesting.
