MMA In Japan! Gono Blogs

New SENGOKU fighter Akihiro Gono wrote on his blog that SENGOKUG! on TV Tokyo will end in September. Some might remember an article from a month ago where there were rumors of TBS/other channels and SENGOKU. That article also said that SENGOKUG! would end in September. Could a possible reason for Ishii’s “late” debut be wanting a bigger and better TV deal beforehand?

However, WVR’s Kokuho told MMA magazine Gonkaku that he doesn’t want a TV deal just because of Ishii, he wants all SENGOKU fighters to be behind it. In the same interview Kokuho asserted that there won’t be any union with DREAM this year.

In FEG news, Sadaharu Tanigawa told Gonkaku that DREAM.12 will take place on October 25th in Osaka, one day before the K-1 World MAX 2009 Finals and less than three weeks after DREAM.11.

As for the cancellation of Affliction, it was going to be aired on PPV in Japan, a few hours before SENGOKU IX by the same PPV provider (the undercard for free on a pay channel). It was overshadowing SENGOKU by hardcore fans. DREAM even announced on their website yesterday that Shinya Aoki and Tsuyoshi “TK” Kohsaka were going to commentate the event, something I think people were looking forward to. So this could be a blessing in disguise for SENGOKU.

Update: A video of Gomi training for Affliction was uploaded on his site today. He hasn’t made a blog post or commented the cancellation yet. He actually hasn’t posted anything since the fight was announced, so he could have been in serious training for the fight (he felt like the same winds as the Bushido days were blowing in interviews after the Shooto fight and before this one).

    Totally offtopic:
What are the chances that we see Josh Barnett now at some later Sengoku event (against lets say Antonio Bigfoot, Blagoi Ivanov, etc.)?
Keep an ear open for us, NOB.

I’d like to see ‘Bigfoot’ vs. Barnett is a Steroids match. What a mess Barnett made, WAS a fan. With that said, cannot wait to see Gono in action!

Great news about DREAM.12. I wonder if that means they’ll space out the stackedness of DREAM.11 a little bit.

Also, that sucks about Affliction falling through. What a shame.

well obviously sengoku wants to get a better deal but more importantly the tv stations have to want a piece of ishii

I think they want a piece of Ishii, but do they want a piece of MMA (besides TBS)?

I’m sure we’ll be seeing Barnett back in Sengoku. I believe he still has contractual obligations with them and he did send a fax challenging Ishii to fight (When he was supposed to be training for Fedor). After his latest roids episode, I feel the American scene will blacklist him, and rightfully so. That slippery ducking idiot is a disgrace to mma. I’ve heard that future StrikeForce cards and the M-1 card on August 28 may pick up a few of tose Affliction fights though. Hopefully it happens.I also hope Sengoku TV stays. I’ve enjoyed the shows immensely.
