Seeing the first tiger mask (Satoru Sayama) wrestling on TV, Yuji Hoshino started to occasionally visit a Karate dojo for training as a third year in elementary school. From then and 7 years onward, Hoshino trained at the dojo every day with the aim of becoming the strongest.

Entering senior high school, Hoshino started wrestling. In 1992 and 1993 he took second places in the National Athletic Meet Greco-Roman 69kg class tournaments. He was also in the National Senior High School tournament in 1993 where he took third place in Freestyle Wrestling.

As he entered University he continued Wrestling and took third places at the All-Japan University Championship (Freestyle) in 1994 and 1995.

Entering MMA

Hoshino began MMA at RJW Central where he did hard training for three hours every day. After a couple of amateur fights, He entered the 2000 Pancrase Neo-Blood 8-man Middleweight (82kg) tournament which he won. He continued to fight mostly at Middleweight and Welterweight in Pancrase and DEEP with mixed results.

The 2008 Cage Force FW Tournament

Despite an unbeaten streak in 6 fights from 2005 to early 2007, Hoshino dropped to 65kg in June of 2007 to face Korean Jong Man Kim in Cage Force. The fight ended in a draw.

In 2008, Hoshino participated in Cage Force’s 8-Man Featherweight tournament, facing top FW Antonio Carvalho in the first round. After an entertaining 3-round affair, Hoshino took his first victory over a top FW through an unanimous decision.

In the second round of the tournament, Hoshino faced Takeshi Yamazaki, who at the time was coming off a victory over SHOJI and a loss against Hideo Tokoro in DREAM. Hoshino dominated the fight and won by a kimura in the final minutes of the third round.

Akiyo “Wicky” Nishiura awaited in the tournament final. Hoshino dominated with his grappling and won another clear unanimous decision to become the first generation Cage Force Featherweight Champion.

Where Is Hoshino?! SENGOKU Entry

After the tournament, there wasn’t much news about Hoshino. After being rumored as a participant of SENGOKU’s 2009 Featherweight GP, it was said that he wouldn’t participate due to getting married. Time went on and his profile was removed from the Wayjutsu Keisyukai GODS (his gym) website…

However. At a press conference on September 24th, 34 year old Hoshino, married and with old injuries healed, was announced as the latest signing for SENGOKU’s Featherweight division. On November 7th, almost exactly 11 months after his Cage Force FW Tournament victory, he will face another champion in Featherweight King Of Pancrase and SENGOKU FW GP semifinalist, Marlon Sandro.
