New Years Eve 2009! Thoughts

It’s quite clear now that something will happen on NYE. I think the likely scenario that has happened is that WVR with Ishii couldn’t get a deal for his NYE fight, so Don Quijote, main sponsor of SENGOKU, jumped ship to FEG. That’s how simple it might be. However, there are some questions on my mind.

Will SENGOKU minus Don Quijote continue after this but be a smaller event? What will J-Rock (management company of Yoshida, Nakamura, etc., a lot of the J-Rock people are WVR staff) do?

Did WVR really have no idea that Don Quijote would jump ship when they entered the new Martial Arts Federation and did other such things? Or are WVR staff also following to FEG?

If only Don Quijote jumped ship, can Yoshida vs. Ishii happen at Dynamite!! just like that without any talk/agreement with WVR?

Will Don Quijote continue supporting the small organizations in Japan? Pancrase would probably be dead now without Don Quijote’s help.

Real Sports wrote an article yesterday that Masato’s retirement might be a lie and that there will be a “retirement withdrawal angle” at some point. Masato not having fought Petrosyan before retiring is a good excuse for him coming back. Also, Masato announced his retirement on April 1st this year.

It makes you wonder about Japanese MMA and how much is true. Is Petrosyan really injured? They said that Mousasi got injured before the Super Hulk semifinals, but some people said that he didn’t participate because of money issues.

Petro is really injured. Some guys who were backstage at the finals confirmed this and his fight with Murat Direkci which was set to take place on November 21st on It’s Showtime 2009 Barneveld was canceled. But more importantly, is it sure that Don Quijote withdrew from WVR?

No, still just a rumor. But the one which I think is the most likely. Some people think it will just be a dual TV broadcast, and there are other theories.

One thing’s almost 100% though, FEG and something from sengoku will do something together on NYE. If this wasn’t true there’s no way WVR would just stand around and not say anything while there are strong rumors their NYE event won’t happen. Would hurt tickets a lot.

Hmmm, Chris Nelson from BE is saying that it’s 100% SRC 12 was cancelled and that Saku is booked to fight Misaki and I believe him and his source. I didn’t think though that Yasuda would withdraw from WVR in which he was deeply involved himself but you must have in mind the stockholders of Don Quijote and the fact that only teaming with FEG makes it even possible to have profit from mma I guess. Still kinda unexpected.

  4. November 14, 2009 at 3:08 pm

Yeah, SRC 12 not happening is about 100% clear now.

They probably put a lot of money on Ishii but even with Ishii no station want MMA, so it makes sense to me that Don Quijote have jumped to FEG, where Ishii will be on TV.

I think they were close to a TV deal though, they were supposed to have a big press conference before SENGOKU XI.

Ishii can’t make his debut and it not being on TV. That doesn’t exist.

We’ll see what happens next week though, I don’t completely believe anything yet.

Another thing, the sengoku website was down for several hours a couple of days before XI. I don’t know if it means anything but it was quite a long downtime for it being 2009. I thought they were changing the design/url to something SRC when the site was down.

Petro is definitely injured. I remember watching the post fight presser it looked quite swollen, and you could see the pain on his face whenever he touched it.

Im not sure how bad the fracture is, but he seemed like he would fight Masato no matter what. My guess is that Petro could probably still fight, but Tanigawa just doesn’t like him very much.

This NYE stuff is crazy, hopefully a press conference happens early next week.

Yeah, I saw that also. Been looking closely on Sengoku page this recent days to try and figure something through the updates they make but only thing they wrote after the post-fight comments after XI was a sale of official merchandasing and that the next SRC Damashii!! will center around Hirota and LW belt.

I also refuse to believe all the talks about Sengoku being dead and all other bad rumors just yet but if DQ really withdrew from their sponsorship it’s a disastrous news for them.

why do you think Don Quijote jumped ship?

Now FightersOnly is saying the rumors about Sengoku collapsing is true http://www.fightersonlymagazine.co.uk/news/viewarticle.php?id=3410&offset=0 though I’ll still wait and see what comes next.

    windkick :

why do you think Don Quijote jumped ship?

Because WVR (and them) couldn’t get a TV deal for Ishii’s debut/NYE.

Another question is if Don Quijote will only be involved with FEG for Ishii’s fights or for all events. Don Quijote’s Yasuda doesn’t seem like someone who would want a small part in an organization.

Thanks for the updates NOB, crazy times

Why Sengoku with Ishii – the most popular athlete in Japan (from what I’ve read) couldn’t get a TV deal?! What the hell is going on? Nothing makes sense anymore…

  13. November 14, 2009 at 11:23 pm

I think its because besides Ishii, Sengoku didnt really have allot of big names. Dream has atleast a few guys that can pull in people (used to have Akiyama, still have Kid, Overeem seems to have got popular, Max has Masato etc)

The most important thing is that FEG already had a TV deal for their mma event before officialy forming DREAM and even with the bad ratings they scored, in comparision to other programs TBS aired they were decent enough to keep them going. Also it’s very hard to get on TV with a kakutougi event and it’s been the case for quite a while.

  15. November 15, 2009 at 6:47 am

yea, DREAM wouldn’t have got a TV deal if it wasn’t a FEG show from the start.

Sengoku has had almost as big names as dream. Yoshida, Fujita, etc.

Wasn’t Ishii signing with Sengoku the biggest thing in Japanese MMA (in 2009 at least)? Who cares about who’s his opponent or about the rest of the card – it’s Ishii, the Olympic Gold medalist, the great Japanese heavyweight hope, etc.
Or did something changed and nobody in Japan care about him, more than a year after Olymipcs? Did his popularity decreased lately?

You are looking at it wrong. It’s not that Ishii isn’t popular anymore. It’s just that TV stations don’t want to touch kakutougi (and it’s not like Ishii would fight on every show).

  18. November 16, 2009 at 5:22 pm

My toughts are; Something is happening inside of Sengoku roster too. You remeber this:

Kazuyuki Fujita: Is not to happy with the Sengoku manner’s and manager’s
Hatsu Hioki: Im have not more interest in the Sengoku champion belt (bad decision with Omigawa)
Kazuo Misaki: Jumps totally from the Grabaka ship.
Sergey Golyaev: Work’s for a K-1 match just before he loose with Mitsuoka
Jeff Monson: Only one fight in Sengoku? and later DREAM? (Well he is a freelancer)

None of those things are organizations. Stop getting your tips from “Chris Benoit Fan” Dave Meltzer.

These are events. I thought WVR put on some good ones. It’d be good if they continue to. However, it’s more import, to me, to take these prmoters out of the picture and have the fighters involved in the system. The best should fight the best. Logo fetishizing be gone.

Petrosyan was really injured. Anyone who has injured their hand knows how serious it is. You cannot fight for approximately 2 months. He appeared at the press conference in a cast and stated so himself.

Petrosyan has much more honor than to lie about his hand being injured in exchange for money. To publish rumours and personal speculation as fact is unproffessional.
