The final part of the awesome video series. Check it out here.

#15: Canseco: The Day Before

cansecochoi

When meeting Choi at todays open weigh-ins Canseco said: “This was my first time meeting a person bigger than Bob Sapp. Frankly speaking, I’m afraid. But in Baseball I did various challenges and succeeded. I hope I can do a good fight tomorrow.”

When J.Z. reached out to shake Kawajiri’s hand at today’s public weigh-in, Kawajiri refused.

His heart is already in “fight mode”

#12: Jose Canseco Vs. “Daimajin” Kazuhiro Sasaki

cansecosasaki

Two great retired baseball players, Jose Canseco and “Daimajin” Kazuhiro Sasaki held a one-on-one match at the Yokohama Arena on the 24th before the baseball match between the Yokohama Baystars and the Golden Eagles.

Sasaki pitched and Canseco was batting. Canseco said that he hasn’t swung a bat for about 5 years, so unfortunately he couldn’t hit a home run. Sasaki promised that he will cheer for Canseco against Choi on Tuesday.

#11: 180 Degree Turn For Canseco

cansecodream9

Canseco had a totally different mindset at today’s press conference than when he arrived to Japan yesterday. It seems that his strategy has made an 180 degree turn. “Who said such a thing? I’m a striker so I don’t have any intentions to go for submissions.” he said. Is Canseco playing mind games?

#10: Sapp In Good Shape

When asked about a counter-measure to Minowaman’s leglocks, Bob Sapp said that Minowaman is a submission master so it’s hard to have a counter-measure against it all. However, he wants a fight where he keeps his concentration and Minowaman doesn’t get any chances like that. Sapp feels very good before the fight, he has lost weight, his speed is up, he has studied videos, and he will concentrate on MMA this year.

#9: Quote Of The Press Conference

nortjedream9

Quote of the press conference was made by Jan “The Giant” Nortje. When asked what part of him he has an edge at compared to the other tournament participants, Nortje said: “My cute face. Just a joke (laugh), the small fighters have speed. Their condition is probably also good but, if it’s experience, I have plenty of it.”

#8: Mousasi And Hunt

Gegard Mousasi told reports that he feels good, he added some weight for this fight but it’s no problem. When asked about his current weight he said that he’s currently at 98 kg. Regarding the weight difference Mousasi said that he will make use of his speed and cleverly use his opponents body weight in the fight.

When asked what kind of fight it will be, Mark Hunt said that he will take Mousasi down and submit him. He says that he has done severe submission training for this fight. Hunt also said that he has opened an internet business selling apparel.

#7: Choi Speaks

choidream9

Choi was present at the DREAM.9 press conference today and when talking to the press said: “I saw the video of his (Canseco’s) Boxing fight and I thought it was pitiful.”

Also, when told that Canseco didn’t have a real trainer for this fight Choi said that it was the same for him, no proper trainer in Seoul and he had to do it himself. He says that his condition is incomplete now but it will reach its climax in the second half of 2009.

#6: Naito Fight In Shanghai Moved! Tokyo Instead

The world title Boxing fight between Daisuke Naito and the 10th ranked Xiong Zhao Zhong in Shanghai has got a geographical change and will instead take place in Tokyo on the same day. The reason seems to be some promoter’s problem, but they’re vague about that. I think it was interesting for people that the fight was going to be in China (first Chinese fighting for a world title, etc.) so this could lower interest (even with the Japanese). Also, now it’ll be in the same city as DREAM.9.

#5: Canseco Has Arrived

Canseco has arrived. - Sportsnavi.com

Jose Canseco arrived to Japan today when his flight landed at Narita Airport. He told the press: “I don’t even know whether my punches can reach Choi’s head or not. While having a tight defense and using my footwork well to move around, I want to take him down and end it on the ground with a submission.”

He also said that he has trained his punches, kicks, etc. at 3, 4 gyms near his house and has focused especially on stamina because of the 10 minute first round.

#4: Strangest Open Training Session Ever?

Jason “Mayhem” Miller has arrived in Japan and today, him, Shinya Aoki, and Masakazu Imanari held an open training session. During their three-way spar, Mayhem took the caps of Imanari and Aoki so they in turn decided to take off his shorts. The whole ordeal ended with all three of them without pants. The press are calling it a strange training session and the three fighters perverts/abnormal.

  1. May 20, 2009 at 8:51 am

so no new fight it seems?

  2. May 20, 2009 at 8:53 am

    nope, doesn’t seem so.

!!! Jacare vs Mayhem is the main event? Minowaman vs Bob Sapp is the curtain jerker?? JZ vs Kawajiri will take everyone into the intermission??

    My emotions… so conflicted

  4. sprewell
    May 20, 2009 at 2:06 pm

I expected Sapp vs. Minowa to be the opener. It’s Minowa. He always opens.

They will do some clever editing on the TV broadcast, though. They will look to start strong in the first quarter with probably Sapp vs. Minowa, then the Tokoro fight, maybe something else, and close the first part with Choi vs. Canseco. They want to keep viewers from the Naito fight, and doing that will require them to build to certain fights throughout the show.

    May 20, 2009 at 3:34 pm

    Still a very good card.
6 interesting fights in the regular programming.
In the entertainment part, Hunt vs Mousasi is a legit fight and while Norjte-Soukou might not be a world class show, it still is ok to build Soukou back up.
I dont care for Choi or Canseco but I like Minowaman-Sapp for the fun of it all, besides no one cares usually about any fight that;s not in the main card with the usual contingent of nobodies.
    This card has it all.

Of course, if you read the usual douchebags-cum-selfproclaimed-humorists on the american blogs, they cant read past the entertainment value of the show.
Of course, everything those wankers at CageHerpes talk about Japan MMA has to be put down, insulted, marginalized because the only ‘real’ MMA comes from their homeland. In a nation that celebrates every national league champion as a ‘world’ champion, this shouldnt be a surprise.

i see minowa playing this fight the same way he did agasint butterbean..lotta circling, buying time, dashing out of harms way, then some outlandish flying jump kicks or similar crazy stuff.

  7. whomever
    May 20, 2009 at 5:13 pm

Bob Sapp won’t let him get away with that. It’ll be gong and dash right out the gate for Sapp, and Minowa will get pummeled.

Minowa’s only chance is to grab a leg while Bob Sapp is raining down the hammerfists.

I was really hoping for a new fight to be announced. hopefully Manhoef in the works because he hasn’t performed in the DREAM ring all year.

  10. cacti
    May 20, 2009 at 6:44 pm

Manhoef said he was contractually obligated to fight on May 26th at Dream 9. So that would be sweet if he got added late

I remember when Andy Oologun/Daisuke Nakamura was was added to at DREAM.5 card a few days out. If anything is added I would expect it to be a very undercard type of match like that, and not something with any name players in it.

    >The press are calling it a strange training session and the three >fighters perverts/abnormal.

    Man, I love japanese fighting.

Considering that you have fighters show up in school girl outfits and such, you know its something special when the japanese press calls you ‘perverts/abnormal’.

    http://dreamofficial.com/free/news/detail.php?id=1235990382
Im not sure if the threesome shots are equivalent or worse than the pictures at the bottom with Imanari doggie styling Aoki but there seems to be a heavy homoerotic content to a lot of these ‘playful’ events. How about one of them playfights against some japanese AV starlet instead?
If not MMA is gonna be a lot like Joe Rogan says bodybuilding is all about: http://gettingpumped.ytmnd.com/
( if it doesnt work, you can DL the skit here: http://content.ytmnd.com/content/c/f/3/cf368d4395fdf4994b5048b55676d359.mp3 )

Still, someone should just follow those three fabulous freaks around with a camera all week.

I havent been too interested in the last few Dream events, but I’m excited about this one.

It will be nice to see Kid back in action, Sapp slaughter Minowa, & Canseco catching Choi in a flying armbar

It’s too bad they had to, but they had to do something for ratings.

Regarding the criticism from americans: if the super hulk tournament was staged by zuffa, most of the critics would be jerking off to the promos, especially kevin iole. Plus, I don’t think it’s americans against it, just the “zuffa zombies.” These undead people will love zuffa even as it burns in hell. Battered women’s syndrome, I’ve heard it called.

Wow! Is Aoki gay? Were those rainbow-colored pants (PRIDE 2006 NYE show) his way of coming out? I remember he said something about rainbow being the symbol of homosexuals…
I’m not saying it’s wrong or something, I’m just curious…

  22. Fightgod

Wow. The venue change of the Naito fight really sucks. Hope it doesn’t affect the ratings or attendance of DREAM.9 too much.

  24. Rictor
    May 23, 2009 at 6:11 pm

Nor attendance nor ratings. That’s like two different worlds, boxing and mma.

  25. Whomever
    May 23, 2009 at 6:49 pm

In the United States, maybe. But NOB seemss to think it might have an impact, even if it is a marginal one.

  26. May 23, 2009 at 6:57 pm

I just think that people won’t be as interested. I lost a little interest. First Chinese to fight for the world title and is fighting in China. Now he’s fighting in Japan. This guy isn’t as good as Naito, but at least if it was in China he would get huge support and would’ve fought with a lot of heart. Now it feels like he doesn’t have any chance at all and for the Japanese it feels more like it’s just another title defence for Naito.

Since this fight and DREAM are in the same TV program (they haven’t even said which is when during the three-hour block) of course the ratings of this fight will have an effect on DREAM’s ratings. I don’t think the Boxing fight will be hugely affected by the location change though.

Well, it can have some impact but truth to be told, I didn’t expected a big positive impact on DREAM’s ratings cause of the Naito fight from the start. We’ll see what happens though. It’s a pitty that kakutougi is having very big problems in Japan now. I was going to throw some money on it when I finally move there permanently but now I don’t even know what the situation will look like tomorrow, not to mention the more distant future.
