The Korean Zombie! Chan Sung Jung

Name: Chan Sung Jung
Born: March 17th, 1987
Height: 175 cm
Background: Hapkido & Kickboxing
MMA Record: 10-1
Dojo: Korean Top Team

The Korean Zombie Is Born

Chan Sung Jung studied Hapkido (Korean Aikido) for years before joining a Kickboxing gym at the age of 18. He later joined the Jungshin MMA Gym to start his MMA training. Today he trains at the Korean Top Team.

Jung’s nickname in Korea is “Zombie”. His MMA record is currently 9-1. However, including his amateur fights he has probably had over 35 fights (might include Kickboxing fights).

Taking Over Korean MMA

In June of 2007 Jung won in an event called Super Sambo in Korea. In December the same year he participated in the Lightweight division of the first ever Pancrase Korea Neo-Blood Tournament. He defeated In Seok Yoo by submission in the semifinals and in the final he faced Machado Jiu-Jitsu’s Hyung Geol Lee and won by TKO.

Jung was also a participant of a show called Street Fighter in 2007 which aired on South Korean cable TV. He participated in the 70 kg tournament and won. The tournament was stand-up only (similar to K-1 but not in a ring).

Jung’s last fight in Korea was in May of 2008 when he participated in a KOREA-FC 8-Man MMA Tournament which he won, continuing his undefeated MMA streak.

Advancement To Japan

In August the same year he made his MMA debut in Japan when he faced UFC & PRIDE veteran Michihiro Omigawa at a GLADIATOR event in Okayama. He defeated Omigawa by decision and returned to Japan for the second time in December against Cage Force Featherweight GP semifinalist, Fanjin Son. He won by KO in 17 seconds.

The 2009 SENGOKU Featherweight GP

After his two impressive victories in Japan, Jung was signed by big promotion SENGOKU to compete in their 2009 Featherweight GP. In the first round of the GP he faced Shooto veteran Shintaro Ishiwatari. In what might have been the most exciting fight of the first round, Jung submitted Ishiwatari late in the first round after dropping him.

Jung advanced in the tournament and faced Team ZST’s Masanori Kanehara in the second round. The fight went to the judges who declared Kanehara as the winner, a decision that many disagreed with. However, on August 2nd, Jung got another chance in SENGOKU and it’s Featherweight GP when he faced Matt Jaggers in the reserve fight of the GP finals. Jung won by triangle choke in the second round.

We see the Brazilian, American, South Korean, Canadian (probably), and Australian flags on the poster. However, no fighter from Australia has been announced yet. Who could the Australian fighter in the GP be? Ian Schaffa? The poster also shows us that Hatsu Hioki is the fighter that WVR will push in this GP.
